When you first purchased a car, you were required to purchase liability insurance - but why? Liability insurance is one of the most important coverage options one can hold, hence the requirement for certain liability coverage through auto insurance.
What are Liabilities?
When you are considered to be responsible, such as when driving, you run the risk of being held liable for accidents or problems that you cause. You are legally responsible for liabilities that you cause, which is why each state implements unique requirements for the minimum amount of liability insurance a motorist can obtain.
Understanding Liability Insurance:
Liability insurance is required by law in nearly all states if you want to cruise up and down the roads. There are two types of liability insurance that are required: bodily injury liability and property damage liability. Bodily injury liability covers your liabilities when you cause an accident that results in an injury or death. In contrast, property damage liability covers your liabilities when you cause property damage, such as when you damage another car in an auto collision or when you hit a light post.
California Liability Requirements:
In California, you are required to have at least $15,000 in bodily injury liability coverage for the injury or death of one individual and $30,000 in bodily injury liability coverage for the injury or death of multiple people. You are also required to have at least $5,000 in property damage liability coverage for any damage you cause to someone else's property.
