May is Motorcycle Awareness Month.
Experienced motorcycle riders know that accidents aren't a matter of €œif,€ they're a matter of €œwhen.€ Most drivers are almost never on the look out for motorcycles because their minds are focused on other cars or road troubles, and also because motorcycles are very small. It's important that all riders remember this fact before they hit the road and try to be safe as possible. May is Motorcycle Awareness Month; here are some tips that you should take in order to prevent crashes that could prove to be fatal.
Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over
Statistics show that the percentage of intoxicated motorcyclists involved in fatal vehicle crashes is greater than the percentage of intoxicated drivers involved in fatal car crashes. It makes sense, a driver has the frame of the car and airbags, while a biker has their helmet and the thickness of their leather jacket to absorb the energy of the car and ground.
Share the Road
All motorists should remember to €œshare the road€ with motorcycles and to be on alert to help keep all motorcyclists safe. This is a two-way street (metaphorically, but also literally)! Motorcyclists are reminded to make themselves visible to other motorists and to never assume the other vehicle sees you if you are going to pass or make a lane change.
Avoid wearing dark clothing, when you ride and wear bright and reflective gear to stand out as much as possible.
