How to Put Tire Chains on Your WheelsStay safe on the icy winter roads with tire chains.

Some people may not be familiar with them, or thought they only came in handy in spy movies like €œJames Bond: Die Another Day€.  Though in some states, these are quite common as the extra traction helps them stay in control of their vehicle. If you find that your vehicle does not have the best traction when it comes to the winter roads, tire chains may save your life. (It helps to know how to put them on, of course.) With the car in €œpark,€ and the e-brake engaged, place the chains on the tire. The bottom portion of the wheel can obviously not be covered at this point. Just fit the chain to the exposed part of the wheel as best you can. Make sure you have fastened the chain! To cover the bottom portion of the wheel, simply drive a few feet until the bottom part of the wheel is now on top. Put the car in €œpark€ and once again activate the emergency break. Then cover the remaining portion of the wheel and fasten. Next, tighten the chains by using a closer link. You're now ready to drive, but only a few yards. Once you've driven about 30 yards, get out of your car and re-tighten the links as they may have been loosened after distributing themselves evenly around the tires. Taking the chains off is a lot easier than putting them on. Simply unlock the chains and let them fall. You can't remove the chains yet because of the wheels resting on them (unless you can lift a car, but unless you're an Olympic heavyweight lifter or Superman we don't recommend you do this). Drive a few feet and make sure your wheels have cleared the chains. When you put the chains back in their bag, make sure they're dry and untangled.
