Protect Your New Possessions in the New Year
With the New Year already underway, people are considering their resolutions and getting back into routine after the holidays. It may not be on the top of your to-do list, updating your home inventory is worth considering in January. Take a look at how and why to spare some time tending to your home inventory this year.
Why You Should Update Your Home Inventory
If a fire tore through your home tomorrow, could you recall everything that was destroyed? Most homeowners can't. It's always a good idea to have an up-to-date home inventory on hand for insurance purposes. If you need to file a claim, you'll be in a much better position if you have a detailed list of your belongings.
It's likely that you received some nice gifts over the festive period. If you don't add them to your home inventory, your insurer may not pay to replace them if they are damaged or stolen. Whether you were gifted jewelry, brand new electronics, or a valuable piece of art, be sure to add them to your home inventory.
Get Started
If you already have a home inventory, simply review it and add/remove items as necessary. Before putting all of the holiday gifts away in their new spots, add them to your inventory list. Gather receipts and ask gift-givers for receipts so that you have proof of ownership on hand. If you sold or donated any items, be sure to remove these items from your list. If you have more than one copy of your inventory, don't forget to update each version!
If you don't have a home inventory, take the time to create one. Move through each room recording your belongings with either photos or a video (or both!). Record serial numbers, identifying features, and gather receipts. Store this inventory online and send a copy to your email so that you have a backup!
