Don't look into the light.
Although it may seem difficult, it's better to not look directly into the lights of oncoming traffic. Gaze as far over to your right as you can do so safely, while focusing on the white line. The headlights can seem blinding, so it's best to divert your eyes away from oncoming traffic.
Increase distance and reduce speed.
Everyone is in a rush to get home at the end of the day, but speeding at night is a recipe for disaster. Make sure there is at least a 3-second gap between yourself and the vehicle in front. If there isn't, slow down and leave plenty of room for stopping. Even familiar roads you know like the back of your hand can appear unfamiliar once it gets dark, and it is much safer to reduce your speed so that you have time to react.
Be aware of others on the road.
Try to stay aware of vehicles in front, behind, and to the side of you at all times. Keep an eye out for first responders and tow trucks, slowing down and moving over safely when they are behind you. A little bit of courteous driving can go a long way in keeping yourself and others safe.
Watch for pedestrians.
Walkers and joggers don't always wear reflective clothing, and they can be incredibly difficult to see in the dark. Take extra time to watch for pedestrians, especially on poorly lit streets. Be mindful of areas around schools and colleges where there may be children playing or crossing the road.
