More than four million motorcycles are registered within the United States, reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA.) In California, there are more than 800,000 registered motorcycle riders. If you're out there enjoying the highway breeze on any size motorcycle or scooter, it's essential to practice motorcycle safety.
Consider the following tips and tricks for keeping yourself and passengers safe when enjoying a motorcycle ride.
- Be trained, licensed and properly insured. Even if you've been riding for several years, consider taking a motorcycle safety class as a refresher.
- Be visible. You and your motorcycle need to be seen in order to avoid accidents. Use reflective strips/decals on clothing and the bike and remember to keep your headlight on for both day and night riding. Never ride in a car or truck's blind spot.
- Wear protective gear including a helmet that meets DOT standards, face protection/eyewear, closed-toe shoes, gloves, pants, long sleeves/riding jacket.
- Practice S.E.E.
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) promotes S.E.E.€”Search, Evaluate and Execute. This is a rider's decision-making process taught during MSF riding classes. Identifying potential safety hazards while riding, evaluating their danger and then taking the corrective measures to avoid a potential accident can significantly reduce motorcycle rider injuries and deaths.
