Prevent Your Car From Overheating
Summer is the most popular time of the year for road trips, camping weekends, and sunny beach days. Summer also means rising temperatures, which can be tough on cars. On hot days in hot areas, there is a real risk of a car overheating. Check out these tips to
prevent your car from overheating.
Do monitor your car's temperature gauge. Your car or truck likely has plenty of gauges and indicator lights to warn you of any problems with your vehicle. These gauges should not be ignored! Always monitor the temperature gauge to see if the engine is even starting to run too warm, which can be indicative of a problem.
Do check your coolant. One of the most common symptoms that causes an engine to overheat is that the coolant system is running low. Make sure that you're using the proper mix of coolant and water for your vehicle. Keep some in your car in case you are ever running low.
Do inspect your radiator for debris. Your radiator has to deal with a lot of abuse being at the front of your engine, since leaves, bugs, and dirt can get stuck in there. Debris that is jammed in the radiator can cause it to impact the amount of airflow through the vehicle's cooling system. It's a simple procedure to clear out your radiator yourself, or take it to a trusted service center for them to take care of it for you.
Do turn off the air conditioning in very hot conditions. Although this seems cruel, using your air conditioner when it's extremely hot outside can cause your vehicle to overheat. The air conditioner places a lot of strain on the engine, causing it to work harder and, in turn, hotter. As the engine heats up, so does the coolant.
Don't keep driving if the car is making sounds. Driving one extra mile with a faulty coolant system can destroy a car's engine.
Don't touch the radiator cap when the car is hot. A hot radiator cap can cause third-degree burns on hands and faces. Wait until the car has cooled down, and even then, take extra caution when removing the cap.
