Easy Ways to Conserve Water
As we approach the hottest months of the year, we're reminded that droughts continue to be an issue. Droughts pose more danger than just water shortages. They can lead to prime wildfire conditions, as well as severe flooding when it finally does rain. California often experiences extreme droughts, and this year looks no different. While there's little you can do about it, you can help to conserve water to prevent the drought from getting worse. What's more, by saving water, you'll also be saving money every month.
Use your dishwasher. In most cases, filling up a dishwasher completely uses less water than washing these dishes by hand. If you have an old dishwasher (built before 1994), consider upgrading it to a newer model that uses water more efficiently. Be sure to only run the dishwasher when it is full.
Change your shower head. A quick and easy way to save water and money is to change your shower head to a low-flow stream. This won't impact your routine too much, but it can help to save gallons of water every week. For an added benefit, shorten your shower!
Alter your landscape. Many homeowners are proud of their beautiful green lawn and colorful flowers. However, if it's using up a great deal of water to keep your garden looking this way, it's time to consider landscaping with water-wise plants. Succulents, gravel terrain, and synthetic grass can all look stunning while saving on water.
Cut back on meat and dairy. If you really want to help lessen the effects of the drought, turn to your diet. You can save more water by not eating one pound of beef than you would by not taking a shower for six months. You could save 50,033 gallons of water a year by simply not consuming dairy. Up your intake of plant-based foods while cutting back on meat, dairy, and eggs.
Wash your car consciously. In California, washing your car can be seen as a waste of water. Luckily, you can still keep your car looking clean without harming the water sources. There are water-conscious car washes throughout California that recycle water and use biodegradable soap to wash the car.
