According to the National Science Foundation each year there are approximately 1.5 million car collisions evolving deer in the U.S., causing 1.1 billion dollars in damage and approximately 150 motorist deaths. With deer season approaching it's a good time to review some tips for safe driving in deer country.
  • If you see one deer on the road, proceed with caution, there are almost always more. Deer move in groups - you don't want to accidentally hit one while avoiding another.
  • Dawn and dusk are the most active times for deer. Pay special attention when driving during these times or stay off the road if possible.
  • Have a plan. What would you do if you hit a live animal with your car? Start with a call the local police or emergency services. Don't try to help or move an injured animal, you may cause further damage to the deer or be hurt yourself. Assess any damage to your vehicle and call your insurance agent.
