Mold can serve many purposes in the natural world, but can be hazardous if they find their way into your home.
There are 980 known gymnosperms in the entire world - trees like pines and cypresses. There are just above 5,400 species of mammals throughout the planet - animals like whales, mice, and humans. So, how many species of mold do you think there are? The answer is an astonishing 100,000! All of them have the job of being the earth's decomposer - turning dead organic matter back into its basic molecules to be used as fuel once again by another organism, like the food you eventually eat (meat, or otherwise). And while they are necessary for nature, mold can be hazardous if they make their way into your home and germinate. Here are a few tips on how you can protect your home from mold.
Take Control of Humidity
- Never install carpets in places that tend to get damp and moist. Such rooms include kitchens, bathrooms, and basements.
- Keep the humidity in your home anywhere from 30 to 60 percent. You can use equipment such as your air conditioning unit or a dehumidifier.
Take Care of Water Damage
If your home is victim to water damage you need to:
- Properly dry or remove all soaked carpets within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. All that cannot be dried, but be removed.
- Wash all surfaces that came into contact with the water damage with disinfectant to kill any mold spores attached to the surfaces.
