Reduce Staircase Accidents at Work
As an employer, you may do your duty in preventing spilled liquids from causing anyone to slip and cleaning up wires to prevent guests from tripping. However, you may be overlooking one hazardous element in your workplace: the stairs. Preventing accidents on stairways is a necessary undertaking, especially in the workplace. If you are looking for ways to
prevent stairway accidents, consider the following list of suggestions.
Make sure all stairwells conform to safety standards. Research local building code standards and any other legal requirements for stairwell designs. Simply following certain codes can make it possible to prevent accidents in the first place.
Keep stairways clear. Don't pile items anywhere near a stairway. Even if you're moving boxes up to the top floor to another department, don't leave items on or near the stairs.
Install handrails on both sides of the stairway. Opt for rails that are curved and smooth so that clothing and bag straps do not get caught while on the stairs. Check the handrails often to ensure they are not unsteady or detached from the wall.
Light it up. Provide ample lighting on the staircase so that the steps can be clearly seen. Consider photoluminescent step edges/nosings and handrails. Also, make sure the top and bottom step nosing is a different color for confirmation.
Post notices. Ensure that people know that they are approaching steps by posting signs near the stairs. Make sure these signs are posted in a very visible spot. If there is an odd step at the bottom of the stairwell or if the steps are narrow, let people know.
