With only weeks until El Nino hits, right now is the perfect time to ensure you are ready for the storm.
If you have been keeping up with the weather forecast at all, you know about the monster El Nino that is expected to hit California. While you may welcome the heavy rains after the more than 5-year drought, the storm can lead to serious trouble if you are not ready.
To help protect your home and family before the storm hits, keep this guide to preparing for El Nino in mind.
- Update your home inventory and insurance - take a look at your home insurance policy and inventory to ensure they match up with all of your personal belongings. If you have any items that aren't included in your inventory, add them as soon as possible. Make sure your insurance agent has an updated copy of your inventory.
- Flood insurance - even though your home insurance policy will protect your home from many different situations, it will not provide any coverage for damage that is done during a flood. You will need a specific flood insurance policy to cover damages that are caused by a flood. Keep in mind that flood insurance has a 30-day waiting period before it will kick in, so the sooner you choose a policy, the sooner you can enjoy protection.
- Emergency preparation - look through your emergency kit to ensure you have everything that you need, including water, non-perishable food, medications, warm clothes, blankets, and personal hygiene supplies. You should have enough supplies to last each member of your family, including your pets, at least 72 hours.
