Motorcycle Riders, use these tips to avoid cars and accidents.
As a motorcycle rider, you would think that the other drivers on the road would keep an eye out for you. After all, all they need to worry about is adjusting their climate control and minding the speed limit, while you have the multiple considerations that being exposed to the air (and the road) bring.
Unfortunately, though, drivers are all too often unaware of your smaller vehicle. This leads to accidents unless you go on the defensive. Protect yourself against careless cars by using this motorcycle safety tips for avoiding cars.
- When you split lanes, be especially careful when one lane of traffic starts to move more quickly. Some drivers will try to swerve over quickly to get into the faster-moving lane. Also, try to avoid drivers' blind spots as much as possible.
- When cars around you are changing lanes, try to move out of the driver's blind spot. Always act as if the driver doesn't see you - because odds are high her or she doesn't! Try to maintain a position where you can see the driver's eyes in the side mirror so you'll be in the driver's line of vision.
- When drivers are turning left, they're more likely than ever to cause an accident with you (42 percent of car/motorcycle accidents occur during a left turn). To make sure you don't become a statistic, never speed through an intersection, ride on the left side of your lane to be more visible, and be ready to take emergency defensive maneuvers.
