How to Celebrate and Support Nurses on the Coronavirus Front Line

Medical workers are on the front lines of the frightening coronavirus pandemic spreading around the globe, and doctors and nurses alike are being hailed as heroes. Even so, nurses working to treat COVID-19 patients don't necessarily need hero worship from their spouses, friends, and community. Instead, they need all the support they can get to do their job. Since May 6th is National Nurses Day, here are some thoughtful gestures on how to help those who are risking their lives for the sake of others.   Understand what they're up against. You may already know that medical professionals are up against a virus that is still largely unknown yet highly contagious. They may be scared about running out of medical supplies, protective gear, or even fear of spreading the virus to their at-risk family. They may well be physically and mentally tired. The better you understand this, the better you can help them.   Stay at home. If you don't need to be at work or you're able to work from home, stay at home as much as you can. The best thing you can do for nurses during this time is to stay at home and socially isolate even if you're not required to by law. This helps to flatten the curve and take pressure off the hospitals.   Offer support for nurses with children. Within the restrictions of social distancing, nurses could really use relief from the double burden of the pandemic at work and child-care demands at home. If you know nurses in your community, see if you can do some of their work such as shopping, teaching, babysitting, or cleaning.   Take some emotional burden off nurses within your community. You can help nurses by supporting the most vulnerable in your community before, during, or after they encounter COVID-19. Call relatives who are isolated to keep their spirits up and reduce loneliness, especially those in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.   How are you celebrating National Nurses Day?
