Be prepared for the unexpected with these nuclear attack survival tips.
If there's one thing that's certain in today's society, is that everything is
uncertain. With the condition of the political force, state, and increased terrorist attacks, it's impossible to know when and if we are in danger. There is now potential for terrorists to get their hands on nuclear weapons, arguably the most lethal and devastating of weapons.
If you live in a big city, near a historic landmark, or near a military base, relocating is not always an option. While there is no guarantee that you'll survive a nuclear attack, or escape the radioactivity if you do survive, it's always important to know the basic survival tips.
You'll need to do three things during a nuclear attack:
- Avoid the blast
- Avoid the heat
- Avoid the radiation
The most important part of that is to avoid looking at the blast directly. You can permanently lose your sight if you do!
Prepare the Home
- Close off the air: Use duct tape to seal off windows, doors, and vents. Close off your chimney, too. You don't want the outside, contaminated air getting into the property.
- Stock up on emergency food: Stock a one month supply of no-cook foods that don't require refrigeration. Canned vegetables, fruits, beans, rice, and peanut butter are great ideas. It may not be exciting, but at least you won't starve to death.
- Have a supply of drinking water: Ensure that this is enough for all family members and pets that will last at least 9 days.
- Don't forget a supply of pet food and any medication he/she needs.
- Be prepared for a power outage: Stock up on batteries, hand-cranked radios, and flashlights.
- Have a well-stocked first aid kit. It's likely that medical assistance will not be available.
- Listen to the news. Stay informed about other attacks, safety, and possible evacuation orders.
Head for Cover
If you're outside when a blast hits, you'll want to immediately head for cover. Aim to get inside a basement, hallway or large building and stay away from the glass. If you out in the open, you'll need to look for a ditch or a depressed piece of land. Cover yourself with anything around you and stay covered until the blast wave passes.
