Thanksgiving is a time where we celebrate what we have and give thanks in a very humbling moment.
Thanksgiving is a time in which we get together with our friends and family and reflect on the privileges that we are born with as Americans and give thanks for it all. It's a very humbling holiday (that is, perhaps ironically, followed by rushing stores and malls to purchase as much as we can). While we give thanks to everything we have, it's important that we give back to our community because a healthy community makes for happy people. Here are a few ways you can give back and make the day a little brighter.
- Share your family. If you know of anyone whose family is too far away or are not doing anything for Thanksgiving, invite them to dinner at your house. This person can be a friend, coworker, neighbor, or a foreign student who has never experienced Thanksgiving.
- Donate what you don't need. Receiving is nice, but giving fills one with a certain kind of joy that can rarely be matched. This Thanksgiving, thousands of underprivileged families won't have a bountiful feast. Can you imagine Thanksgiving without a turkey? This is their reality every year. Donate as much food and clothing that you can to give them a proper Thanksgiving.
