Take the time to honor the people who serve our country on Veterans Day.
Veterans Day originated as €˜Armistice Day' on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War 1. However, it wasn't until 1938 until November 11 became a national holiday. Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans - living or dead - but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.
Veterans Day falls on this day specifically because on the 11
th hour of the 11
th day of the 11
th month in 1918, World War 1 ended. In 1921, an unknown soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Similarly, unknown soldiers had been buried in England at Westminster Abbey and at France at the Arc de Triomphe. All of these memorials took place on November 11
th to commemorate the end of the way to end all wars.
National ceremonies commemorating Veterans Day occur each year all around the nation. This should be a time when Americans stop and remember the brave women and men who have risked their lives for our country.
To honor our heroes on Veterans Day, here are a few ideas.
Say thank you. Many veterans will dress in uniform on Veterans Day. If you see a person in military uniform on this day (or at any other time of the year!) express your gratitude for all they do. A simple €˜thank you' goes a longer way than you think!
Learn. Visit your local military monument or museum to learn more about the sacrifices that men and women take when they join in protecting our country.
Support. Many charities are dedicated to aiding veterans and their families. If possible, shop and donate to these charities so that they can keep on doing their important work.
