The Holidays & DUIs
The holidays are just a few days away, emphasizing the importance of discussing safety tips for driving during the holiday season. Unfortunately, the holidays and DUI statistics come hand in hand. Drinking and driving is one of the leading causes of fatalities, stressing the importance of educating every one on safer driving options.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were an average of 36 deaths per day between 2001 and 2005. However, during the holiday season, that number increases to an average of 54 fatalities per day. During the holidays, far too many spreading holiday cheer choose to get behind the wheel. Rather than starting off the New Year with a DUI on your hands and a load of guilt for the damage and harm that you have caused, consider one of these safe alternatives:
- Calling a cab has never been so convenient. With taxi services such as Uber and Lyft setting up smartphone applications, you can call a safe ride home with a simple click of a button on your phone. These apps provide you with countdown to when your safe ride will arrive at your destination.
- If you have a group of friends that you attend the same parties with, set up a schedule where each of you are the designated driver for a different party. This will allow all of you to get the most out of each party you attend but will still make it home safe.
- Despite common notion to avoid ruining someone's fun, it is imperative that you report suspected drunk drivers. If someone at the party refuses to put down their keys and speeds off, you have a duty to call the authorities immediately to save innocent lives.
