Keep your trick-or-treaters safe and happy on Halloween night with these tips!
Halloween is just days away. Are your kids excited yet? With the opportunity to put on their cool costumes and gather up copious amounts of candy, there's plenty for them to look forward to!
As you look ahead, though, you should have a few more things on your mind that sweets and sweet costumes. Particularly, it's important you keep these Halloween safety tips for trick-or-treaters in mind on the coming holiday!
- Before you start trick-or-treating, make sure your kids will be able to handle the journey safely and comfortably. Shorten the hems of any long costumes that would present a tripping hazard, widen eye holes for increased visibility, and put them in comfortable shoes.
- It pays to plan your route in advance. This not only helps you avoid candy-free non-residential areas, it can also help you stick to well-lit, well-traveled streets.
- Carry candy with you as you trick-or-treat to give your kids so they'll be willing to wait to dig into the spoils they're collecting. That way, you can go through all of their treats when they get home to make sure there are no hiding tricks (e.g. opened package, homemade pieces).
- Make a point to only cross the street at crosswalks, even if that means walking all the way around a cul-de-sac. This might seem like a pain, but it ensures your kids learn the importance of avoiding jaywalking. Also, wait until you are certain drivers see you before crossing in front of their vehicles.
- Your kids will have more fun and be safer if you trick-or-treat in large groups. Coordinate with their friends' parents for a big outing.
