It's almost Thanksgiving - turkey day! But do you know how turkey became the favorite food for this annual feast? Entertain yourself and your guests with these fun Thanksgiving facts:
  • Turkey wasn't actually featured at the first Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving activist and €œMary has a Little Lamb€ author Sarah Joespha Hale made turkey, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce popular by circulating irresistible recipes for these now traditional Thanksgiving foods.
  • Nearly 20 percent of all cranberries eaten in the U.S. are consumed at Thanksgiving.
  • Only half of the 102 people to sail on the Mayflower were actually Pilgrims. The other half were known as €œstrangers€ and were simply people looking for a ride to the New World.
  • Modern turkeys are bred to have such large breasts that males can no longer mate as nature intended. Their heavy chests make it impossible. Artificial insemination is needed to fertilize turkey eggs in most hatcheries.
