It's a crisp cool morning, right before sunrise. You're sitting patiently on your boat in calm ripple-less waters thinking about everything but nothing at the same time. You've cast your line with live bait and stare intently at your bobber€”ignoring the occasional jiggles as your past experiences have taught you these mean nothing, and you wait for it to truly bob. Once something bites, you pull with all your might, take a picture, unhook and release it back from whence it came. Nothing quite beats the patient thrill of fishing, does it?
Perhaps you have never fished and are new to the sport of fishing. You're not entirely sure if you will enjoy it, but, trust us, a great opportunity awaits you. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) offers two Free Fishing Days annually. On these days, you can fish without a fishing license which provides a great, low-cost way to give fishing a try. There are a few CDFW regions in which they allow you to fish in the middle of large metropolitan areas perhaps only a few blocks away from where you live. Fishing in the City and free fishing days are meant to educate people about the ethics of fishing, fish habits, effective methods for catching fish, fishing tackle, and hopefully get the fisher interested enough to learn about conservation to protect these precious animals.
Take note, all fishing regulations (bag and size limits, gear restrictions, report card requirements, fishing hours, and stream closures remain in effect).
