Supporting American Heart Month
February means heart disease awareness! During American Heart Month, it is important that we take a moment to recognize the importance of heart health and pledge to make a difference. There are so many bad habits out there that Americans partake in daily that must be eradicated to reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease. In February, pledge to make a difference, your heart and body will thank you!
Preventative Action Against Cardiovascular Disease:
- Diet: When you snack on unhealthy treats and indulge on all of your fatty favorites on a regular basis, you are forcing your heart and organs to work harder than necessary. Alter your diet in a way that incorporates foods that are high in fiber and low in cholesterol, trans fat, and saturated fat.
- Exercise: In order for your body to thrive year after year, you must exercise regularly. This means engaging in at least 150 minutes of moderately intense exercise each week. Whether you choose to do so by taking the stairs instead of the elevator or going on a daily morning walk it is up to you.
- Cholesterol: High cholesterol levels can prove to be detrimental to your heart's health. Therefore, it is important that you have your cholesterol checked every five years.
- Blood Pressure: Often, those with high blood pressure rarely present symptoms, therefore, it is important that you check yours on a regular basis. This does not mean checking it daily, but making an effort to do so every time you go to the pharmacy and doctor's office.
- Quit the Stick: Those who smoke cigarettes are directly increasing their chances of cardiovascular disease. If you currently smoke, it is time to do everything in your power to quit the stick. With so much information out there regarding the dangers of this deadly habit, it is a wonder why many still smoke.
