What you need to know to protect your home against wildfire season dangers.
As we trudge deeper and deeper into the California drought with each rainless month that passes, it is no surprise that this summer's wildfire season has been a particularly dangerous one. Do you understand how to read the signals to understand your location's specific risk, though? Here is a quick guide to the national fire danger rating system to use this wildfire season.
- Low - Green: When the signs indicating €œToday's Fire Danger€ show green, we're in good shape. Both weather and fuel conditions would slow a fire's spread.
- Moderate - Blue: If a flame does break out, you can expect to have a moderate spread rate but getting the fire under control still shouldn't be too difficult. You can still perform a controlled burn, but extreme caution should be exercised.
- High - Yellow: The risk of a wildfire is high, and if one does start, windy conditions and ample fuel would enable to it spread. The fire will be more difficult to get under control.
- Very High - Orange: Under these conditions, fires could quickly start and easily spread. Flame lengths will be long, making the fire intensity greater, which, of course, makes controlling the flames extremely challenging.
- Extreme - Red: When €œToday's Fire Danger€ gets into the red, you should not light any outdoor fires of any kind. Any spark could case a massive wildfire that would be extremely difficult to get under control.
