Building relationships throughout your whole life will help you get to where you want to be.

The back to school season is upon us, and that means that many fresh faces will fill university lecture halls and grounds. Even though you may have all the textbooks, notepads, and schedules that you need to start college, you may be missing one important element: networking skills. It's never too early to start networking - you may build lasting relationships. To help you build new college relationships throughout your years, here's what you need to know. Take advantage of internships that are exclusive to students. There are a lot of great internships, and many of them are only open to you as a student. Take advantage of these while you can! Not only will you learn the ins and outs about big companies (Disney and Google often do internships), but it is a great place to forge solid relationships with potential mentors and even employers. Get involved with a student organization. Are you an advocate for the animals? Passionate about the planet? Determined about dance? Get involved with student groups that hold meetings, outreaches, and more to get like-minded people together. If you feel strongly about something, get your voice heard and get out there! Know your college and administrators. Your professors and campus administrators are another great resource for you - but only if you seek them out! Not only will this help to strengthen your knowledge and understanding of a subject, but you never know what opportunities may come your way with these types of connections. Get out of the bubble. Juggling your work load and social life can feel like a balancing act. It's easy to stay in and think that the networking will come to you but, more often than not, it won't. Be sure you get out there and talk to others. Be yourself. It's cliché (we know), but this advice never fails. Simply being yourself and trying not to be like someone else to impress others will help to align your morals and heart truths. In the long run, you will feel more grounded and may receive better offers - simply by being yourself! So, let yourself shine through.
