May 21 marks the beginning of the official wildfire season each year. 2012 saw 9.2 million acres devastated by wildfires and 2013 has already seen one wildfire break out in California before the official start of the 2013 wildfire season. On February 28, Riverside County suffered from a fast moving brush fire that caused evacuations, threatened homes, destroyed 311 acres, and took two days to contain.
With the National Weather Service expecting another long, hot, and dry summer, experts are predicting another major wildfire season. With wildfires a certainty for 2013, the only issues are their severity and frequency. With many states, including California, facing drought conditions, weather patterns and climate change will continue to offer little relief and may in fact exacerbate the problem.
California is in the core area of the heat and drought conditions that are unfortunately ideal for wildfires.
