Yogurt is a delicacy, but how well do you know the yogurt in your cup?
If you've ever wondered about your yogurt but were too busy to look up some neat things about it, look no further!
- Yogurt is alive.
Did you know there are more bacteria cells in and on your body than there are cells of you? Don't freak out, that bacteria helps us perform our daily biological functions that keep us alive. Yogurt has Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus: good bacteria.
- Yogurt is a dessert worthy of the gods.
In the Hind religion, "panchamrita" is a sweet beverage made from only five ingredients: honey, sugar, milk, yogurt, and clarified butter. Panchamrita is Sanskrit for "five" and "nectar of immortality."
- Men don't really buy it.
For some weird reason embedded in the social construct, only 43 percent of men buy and eat yogurt, compared to 68 percent of women. To try and appeal to those manly-men who only want manly-men things, a company called Powerful Yogurt has tried to tap this untapped market.
- It rivals meat in terms of protein.
You may not associate yogurt with protein, and that's because of the way some yogurt companies process their yogurt. It's actually packed with about 10 grams per 8-oz. serving! That's about 20 percent of your daily recommended protein intake.
- Frozen yogurt is not that much different from ice cream.
Many frozen yogurt makers triple-treat their yogurt before turning it into the delicious dessert we all know. Unfortunately, this treatment kills the good bacteria, removes the fat so they can claim it's "fat-free," pump it with sugar, which only leaves behind a sugary treat that's not that much different than ice cream.
