How to Motivate Your Child to Do Their Homework

Parents know that motivating kids to do homework is a chore in itself. When your child comes home for school, perhaps the last thing they want to do is sit down and continue to learn. However, homework is a useful tool that develops their independent skills and progresses their education. So, how do you successfully (and painlessly) encourage your child to do their homework? Here are some tips to help.

Motivating Kids to Do Their Homework

Make it easy

Set up a dedicated space for them to complete their homework. Ideally, this should be free from distractions such as their toys and TV. Set them up at the dining room table or get a desk for their bedroom where there is ample lighting and comfortable seating so that they can get straight to their work.

Establish a routine

Talk to your child about when they find it easiest to complete their homework. Whether it’s right after school or before their sports club, get into the routine of always leaving your child to do their homework at this time. As far as possible, aim to get homework completed well before bedtime.

Recognize and reward

Acknowledge when your child has worked hard and reward them with a small treat. When children feel recognized, they will see what they did as positive.

We hope that these tips help you and your child to establish a positive routine of completing homework.
