Fall Driving Tips: Stay Safe This Season

Beware of Driving Hazards This Fall

Ah, fall. The smell of pumpkin spice fills the air, pumpkins are in every display, and we start to get ready for the cooler months ahead. Although autumn can be a fun and spooky time of year, the road and weather conditions can make driving a little tougher. Along with having the right auto insurance in Banning, CA, here are some tips for staying safe on the roads this fall.

Avoid braking on leaves. Wet leaves can be extremely slippery. Drive through them slowly and avoid braking on them as this could cause you to skid. Be aware that fallen leaves may obscure lane lines and other road markers, so pay attention to the edge of the road and stay in your lane.

Prepare for the weather. Fall is a time of year where you can experience several different types of weather in one day. Check the weather forecast each day before you start driving so that you know what to expect. Even though we don’t often get ice and snow in California, you may consider putting on winter tires if you’re going to be driving out of state over the festive period.

Be on the lookout for animals. Animals, particularly deer, are active during fall. You should always slow down when you see signs for deer crossing and be extra attentive to the road. If you do encounter a deer, slow down and beep your horn.

Get a tune up. Your vehicle should stay in tip-top condition all year long, but this is especially important before winter arrives. Your car may need an oil change, fluids topped up, and new tires and a new battery before winter. Take your vehicle to your local mechanic for a check-up.

Be aware of changes in lighting. The days are getting shorter, which means we have fewer hours of daylight. It’s important to be aware of the changes in light that are going to take place while you’re driving. Always be ready to use your headlights, and keep them on an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset.
