Thanksgiving is a time to enjoy a great feast with your loved ones and recognize all you have to be thankful for. For most Americans, this holiday is an enjoyable opportunity to relax and have fun. While your thoughts may be on the Thanksgiving traffic you'll have to face or the table of good food, there are some essential safety tips to remember over the season.

While at Home

If you're staying at home, chances are there will be cooking involved. According to the National Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the number one day for home-cooking fires. Here are some ways to stay safe over the holidays.

  1. Install smoke alarms (or check the ones you have installed already)
  2. Remove fire hazards around the stove, such as wooden utensils and oven mitts
  3. Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen
  4. Keep all pets and children out of the kitchen while cooking and cleaning up.
  5. Never leave the stove unattended.
  6. Keep an eye on alcohol consumption and make sure that no one drives home drunk.
  7. Do not wear loose-fitting clothes while cooking.
  8. Turn pot handles away from where you stand so that no one bumps into or pulls them off accidentally.
  9. Check the stove and oven before going to bed to make sure that they have been switched off.
  10. Set timers to remind yourself that there is food in the oven or on the stove

While Traveling

If you're traveling over the holidays, you'll want to ensure that your home is safe while you're away.

  1. Install a home security system
  2. Don't post your travel plans on social media sites
  3. Set timers on lights so that it looks like someone is home in the evening
  4. Turn your telephone ringer down so that no one can hear it go unanswered
  5. Never leave a hidden key outside
  6. Ask a neighbor to check in on your house or alert the police if they spot suspicious activity.
  7. Prepare your car if you are traveling by road and keep an emergency preparedness kit handy at all times.
  8. Get adequate sleep the night ahead to avoid drowsy driving
  9. Keep cellphones away to prevent getting distracted while driving
  10. If you are yet to be vaccinated and must travel, follow CDC's travel recommendations for domestic or international travel
