Back to School Tips for Parents
Going back to school can be an exciting and anxious time for you and your child! Ensuring that you both feel comfortable and content with the school is foremost important, which will lead to a happy year for you both! You can ease your child into the new school year with these simple steps:
School Site Tour
If the school your child is going to is hosting an open house, be sure to go. This way, on the first day, your child will not feel overwhelmed in an unfamiliar environment. If an older pupil of the school does a tour, be sure to engage your child in conversation. Knowing another student in the school will ease your child into making more friends. If you are able to meet the teachers whilst touring, it is a great opportunity for your child and the teacher to get acquainted before the first lesson.
If your child knows other pupils going to the school, encourage them to meet up before the start of school. To know a connection going into school can make a difference on your child’s comfort and confidence.
Send Fully Equipped
You should receive a supply list from the school for all of the essential items that your child must bring to class. Keep the basic needs in mind, but allow your child to pick a favorite notebook or backpack to keep their spirits high. This is also a good conversation opener!
Establish a Routine
To switch from a summer to a school schedule can take a couple of weeks to adjust to. Be sure to set the alarm clock a few minutes earlier than you need to be up on the first morning of school to eliminate last-minute panics and rushing. This can cause a great deal of stress to you and your child, but it can set an uneasy tone for the rest of the day. Routines allow children to feel secure, and a solid schedule will make the school year go by smoothly.
