4 Barbecue Safety Tips
Summer barbecuing is one of the finest ways to enjoy a day off of work. Barbecues are perfect for family gatherings and celebrations. Before you invite all your family and friends over, be sure you’ve conducted the obligatory maintenance and follow the necessary safety tips to ensure an eventful day, for the right reasons. Take these 4 helpful tips into consideration to throw an amazing barbecue celebration:
- Location, location, location – Be sure to place your grill in a safe location to avoid a fire. Your grill should be on flat, stable grounds and away from all combustibles. Never place your grill by your picnic tables or a patio overhang. Most importantly, never use your grill inside, even if down pouring rain has ruined your event. If decorating for a special event, be sure to tell the kids there are no streamers or balloons allowed near or on the grill.
- Safe Food Handling – Be sure to always practice basic safe food handling. Keep food at the appropriate temperatures and never cross contaminate. Guests going home with food poisoning will likely cut your RSVPs in half next time.
- Safety First – Always have a fire extinguisher handy and know how to use it. If willing, teach your spouse how to use the fire extinguisher as well in case of an emergency. You will want to set a date each year where you check the expiration date of your fire extinguisher.
- NEVER leave your grill unattended and ALWAYS inform children of the dangers of playing near the grill. If you will be having your friend’s children over, ask them to give them a little grilling safety 101 lesson before any horse play begins.
