5 Tips to Get Your Home Ready for Spring

Prepare Your Home for the Coming Months

Although it may not feel like it just yet, the spring season will soon be upon us. With spring comes the inevitable feeling do spring clean to make our homes sparkle from the inside out. Along with cleaning and dusting, there are a few home maintenance tasks you should add to your spring checklist that can help ensure everything around your home is in working order.

  • Review the roof

The roof can take a battering in the winter months with high winds and rain. Now is the time to ensure your roof is in good condition and make any repairs as necessary. Replace any missing or damaged shingles and inspect the flashing around the chimney.

  • Clean out the gutters

Spring showers mean that we need to clean out the gutters, removing debris and leaves, to prevent any blockages. If there is a blockage, the water can start to seep into the attic and cause water damage, and the gutter could crack. Ensure the downspouts are directing water away from the home’s foundation, too.

  • Look for leaks

Check that there are no leaks coming through the roof and that there are no dripping pipes around the house and in cupboards. Not only could you prevent water damage by catching a leak early on, but you help to save on utility bills when fixing leaking pipes.

  • Check seals around windows and doors

Cold temperatures can cause seals around windows and doors to loosen, harden, and crack. Inspect these areas for damage and make repairs as needed. This will, in turn, help to reduce summer cooling costs and keep water out of your home.

  • Replace your HVAC filter

Replacing the filter for your HVAC is one tip that should be done on a regular basis. Many experts recommend that you do this around every four to six weeks, depending on the type of furnace and how often you use it. Staying on top of this task throughout the year can drastically help prolong the life of your unit and allow it to run more efficiently.

As a homeowner, it may seem like there is always something to do around the house. By following these five tasks, your property will be better prepared for spring.
