How to Safely Share the Road with Pedestrians

How to Drive Safely Around Pedestrians

With millions of cars on the nation’s roads every day, we must all practice safe driving habits. Such a commitment involves more than just fastening your seat belt and merging well with other drivers; it involves pedestrians. Car-pedestrian accidents continue to happen on a daily basis, with many resulting in a fatality. To avoid injury, drivers and pedestrians must learn to share the road.

For Drivers;

  • Stop for pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections. Remember that crosswalks exist at all intersections, even if they’re unmarked.
  • Slow down, pay attention, and always obey the posted speed limit.
  • Make sure you look for pedestrians before initiating a turn at a green light or when making a right on the red.
  • For areas where crosswalks that are not traffic light controlled, slow down. If you see people waiting to cross, make it visible to them that you are slowing down and will stop.
  • Be extra alert in residential areas, school zones, and commercial areas. Children will often dart into traffic without thinking.
  • Never overtake a school bus when they have stopped. Children may be crossing the road.
  • Look before opening your door.
